Eating Disorders Awareness Week is Coming Soon
Eating Disorders in Highland Park, NJ and Manhattan, NY.
Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW), Feb. 24 – March 2, provides an important reminder to treat our bodies with kindness and eat in a way that honors our health, acknowledging that food is a pleasure of life. EDAW, coincidentally, arrives just before spring, the time when people withbody imageandfood issues(i.e., all of us) start thinking ahead to warmer weather and our appearance. As it gets warmer, we need to shed the bulky sweaters and coats, revealing a body, which may not have made it through the winter in perfect shape. For people with eating disorders, concern about the coming spring and summer, may provoke them to start restricting food, which often leads to binging, excessively restricting, overexercising, or purging.
Concern about body size and shape is not limited to people diagnosed with bulimia or binge eating disorders. Much of our society is obsessed with the new weight-loss drugs, and it seems like everyone wants to be on them—even those who don’t need to lose weight.
Instead of putting yourself on a strict diet or a punitively vigorous exercise regimen, let EDAW be a reminder that simply eating nutritious and tasty meals, providing yourself with enough rest, and regular movement is the path to a sustainable, healthy body size.
